It’s Winter And My Lens Is Flaring Up Again

Another engagement photo from Drew. No photoshoppery involved, just a plain old-fashioned lens flare.

This may be my favorite one yet.

  1. How was this done (the lens part)?

  2. Basically it’s the sun (directly behind them) reflecting off of some of the lens elements (every lens is made up of a number of “lenses”, pieces of shaped glass). Most light isn’t reflected but is refracted. Bright light at the right angle for the lens can reflect instead and create fun lens flares.

  3. Thank you Drew! I really didn’t realize anything about the interactions between lenses and sun. I’m one of those who uses a camera as if it had just a few automatic options (regular, up close, no flash). But I understand oil painting. Does that count? By the way, you’d make a fantastic photography teacher. Lots of good wishes for a happy holiday for you and your family (and friends, of course).

  4. What a stunning photo!
